Abstract
Effects of neurotoxin 6-aminonicotinamide (6-AN) on the morphological and biochemical changes in the musc1e of Japanese quail were investigated. 6-AN induced muscular atrophy, rigidity, and a twist of musc1e fiber and showed an enlargement of the nucleus and precipitation of collagen fiber in myofibrils. Electron microscopy showed that 6-AN caused an increase of glycogen granules and the deformity of mitochondria in muscle fibers, suggesting the impairment of an energy generation like ATP. 6-AN caused developed vacuoles and sponge phenomena in the muscles. This suggests that the loss of cristae induced abnormal metabolism of ATP synthesis and aerobic respiration in the cell. The results indicate that 6-AN acts in the role of antimetabolites in the cell which induced the morphological deformity of muscles
